Amazon.co.uk Review

Fighting, it's not big and it's not clever. Usually. However, Namco's first beat-em-up for the PS2, Tekken Tag Tournament, manages to be both of these things and the only part of you which might sustain physical injury are the thumbs, after a couple of hours of sustained play.

Picking up where previous versions of the Tekken family left off, this is a martial arts combat game par excellence. The graphics are lush and incredibly detailed, really picking TTT out from the crowd.

Particularly cool is the ambient animation in the backgrounds during bouts as wind blows through trees and spectators leap around in an amusing fashion; there are times during the early stages of play when it's possible to become distracted by the background action and find yourself on the receiving end of an unusually painful-looking throw--so watch out.

Also much improved over previous versions on other platforms are the number of moves available to each character, just remembering them is a monumental task in its own right and takes a little of the early shine away from the experience. Perseverance is the name of the game here and there's nothing like the first time you hit a stunning combo move and piledrive the opposition into the dust.

The major new feature in this release is the inclusion of the tag feature. Select two fighters from the available list at start time and a swift button push mid-action will switch between the two allowing one to recharge health while the other takes the centre spot. The tag facility also allows for some superb new combo moves: just throw your opponent to the side of the screen, execute a tag and your partner leaps in with a timely bone-cruncher.

Tekken Tag Tournament is as tight a fighting game as you're likely to see. It's graphically gorgeous, the soundtrack thumps along and the action is as fast and furious as you could want. Owners of Tekken 3 on the PlayStation may want to think long and hard before investing cash as version 3 and its PS2 cousin are very similar in many respects, anyone else should part with their cash right now and do themselves a major favour--this will keep you going for months!--Paul Eisinger

Product Description

Forget the fancy full-motion video intros of the past. The cutting-edge gameplay that is promised in the extended intros of fighting games is finally realised in Tekken Tag Tournament This visually stunning action game contains fully rendered 3-D characters who can execute smoothly animated martial-arts moves. With polygonal characters and texture maps this real, you will end up looking for the coin slot on your PS2.

With more than 30 characters to fight against or beside, this game allows you to pull off the ultimate human combo: tag-team fighting. By choosing two fighters who have broadly divergent skills, you can increase your threat to the other fighters greatly. Also, switching out fighters can give an overextended partner enough time to rest up his or her stamina for the next tag. See what happens when one partner throws a foe, tags, and the other partner comes in to keep the foe... uh... airborne. Tekken Tag Tournament contains 20 classic characters from other parts of the acclaimed Tekken series, as well as 12 new characters who can be unlocked during gameplay.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still going strong!, 21 Feb 2002
If you don't already own this game you should buy it. At the new Platinum price the value is fantastic.

This game, though only graphically updating Tekken 3 and adding a few moves per character it has about 35-40 characters. Every fighter for every game is there and I've been playing it on a very regular basis from launch day and it's still going strong (especially with tekken 4 not coming out until christmas).

I'm sure you're thinking "but my mate said dead or alive is better and they're both the same price". It comes down to personal taste at the end of the day. This game is much better where it matters but ANYONE and I mean ANYONE can play DOA2 and it gets boring very fast. Tekken tag is better for the money in every way. (And there is the hidden bowling game!!!)

5.0 out of 5 stars The best beat'em up saga around, 22 Sep 2001
By A Customer
Tekken Tag may not be part of the mainstream story, but the inclusion of all the previous characters makes it the best of the bunch. The graphical upgrade has also made the characters and backgrounds brilliant to look at. The vast amount of moves for each fighter will leave you searching for all stratergies as you decide which characters fit your style best. If you want a fighting game for the PS2, then this is by far the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars GuttenTag TekkenTag, 25 Jan 2002
A few years ago, I remember driving into town one lunch time, from work, to purchase a game called Tekken 3. I had seen Tekken when it first came out. Friends had Tekken 2, but T3 was knockout. Tekken Tag is now here and it makes T3 look like the original game.

The first thing you realise when you play is that the FMV sequences look like your watching film. There's no disappointment when you play the game either. The graphics are supurb throught the whole game. The polygons have all smoothed out, and the bear doesn't look like he was made of straw or biscuits, anymoe.

The characters move quicker, its more responsive, and the number of characters and moves has increased exponentially. This is a game worthy of a Tekken Master.

A whole new element has been added to the game with its Tag feature. Not only can you play the game, one on one as usual, but the main game consists of two characters per team, each tagging the other one on and off to revitalise or to save energy.

Throws have improved as now one character can do a throw whilst leaving the screen, as the other finishes it off, by jumping into the game and inflicting more damage.

The hidden game this time is Tekken bowling. I wont tell you how to get it, I dont wish to deprive you of any fun. This is a great fun game and unlike Tekken Ball this game requires a modicum of skill and practice. Its been well thought out and gives a sometimes well deserved rest from fighting.

My only complaints about the game, are that there is not enough hidden stuff. Once you have unlocked TBowl, and beat all the characters, you dont really get anything else. You do get a feature to take still shots of your games - if you have the speed to get it in time - and a jukebox for when you are playing TBowl - WOW?! There are rumours of a hidden Dr B, but to the best of my knowledge thats it. But with these points being the only bad ones I'd still rate this game 5/5.

Namco have hit bullseye this time. Be it you are getting your butt whipped, or giving your mate the hiding of his life, you'll be doing it in style. Good day, Tekken Tag, we're going to be spending a lot of time together.
